ERSEO - AN INSIGHT INTO THE CUSTOM UNDERGROUND
Last week in a local coffee shop, I met with the genius designer that is behind the up and coming brand “The Custom Underground”, Neil Robinson. We talked for ages about what inspired him to start the company and where he continues to find inspiration for the unique designs he crafts on to an ever expanding footwear and clothing range.
Q. How did the idea of customising clothing come about?
A. It all started with a pair of plain white plims. I’d got bored with them. I remembered hearing about about people that upcycle clothes and so, as I was about to put them in the bin, I thought “Hold on. I can do something with these.” I drew on them. A moment of madness really but it started from there. I also now work on skateboard decks, and wouldn’t rule out working on other sporting equipment in the future.
Q. Where do you get inspiration?
A. It can happen anywhere. For the custom pieces, clients often have the basics of the idea and I just run with it. I am very creative, it comes naturally.
Q. When did you start doing it as a business?
A. About a year ago. I had been creating and drawing designs for friends. Originally, I only worked on plims, but soon realised that it would work on other clothes too. Baseball caps work especially well and they were my next big thing. Watch this space for ink and embroidered designs on Dr Martens, jackets and denim. I put examples of my creations on Facebook and the orders started rolling in.
Q. Where do you see yourself and The Custom Underground in the future?
A. I will always be working in the design industry. I want the blog on my site to be where fashion designers come to see what will be the upcoming trends. Being a household brand would be the ultimate ideal and I would like to see some of my designs taken on by a trendsetting mass producer like Vans. I love working with my clients and making their basic ideas into a cogent design that can be applied to shoes or clothes, so there will always be a part of my business that involves creating custom clothing.
Q. Earlier you said you would like your blog to be where fashion designers come to see the upcoming trends, where will you find the time?
A. As a family man, I don’t have much spare time. So my blog is mainly made up of guest posts from people interested in design. I want to create a buzz around the issues faced by designers of all ages and experience, so all guest posts are welcome as long as they follow the rules. I have a news section on my website where you can find out all about what's happening at The Custom Underground.
Q. Have you met any famous people?
A. I have danced with Diversity and rubbed shoulders with the fashion elite at the Bloggers Love Fashion Events that are held in London.
At the end of what must have felt like an interrogation Neil was still smiling, and he went off to work on his latest order.
With a cool collection of custom made one-off pieces The Custom Underground can personalise many items for you such as plimsolls (plims), baseball hats, skateboard decks and logo design. They work by request and everything is strictly unique and made just for you. For those who have a very individual style, perhaps want to buy a personal gift or to promote their own brand the individual brand The Custom Underground can help you out. You choose the style, colour and theme so where will your imagination take you? Not only are the items styled with industry leading inks I was told that other details can be added such the studded spikes I saw on one of their baseball caps. This is a very youthful brand with that personal touch in mind. I love the edge of the almost tattoo designs that I saw at the event. For those not brave enough to ink their body why not ink your fashion!
MOKS FASHION EYE
Lovely evening last night for the Bloggers Love event which took place at Penthouse, Leicester Square. I saw some fabulous designers but there was one which stood out for me. The Custom Underground – OMG, their custom made plimsolls and baseball hats (literally hand crafted no print material used) are amazing. I was seriously amazed at the level of detail which had gone into each individual piece. #Perfection! Go check them out for yourself http://www.thecustomunderground.co.uk

Moreover a brand that oozed originality was The Custom Underground “handmade one-off custom products,” evidently not only a brand but an artistic talent! Having already designed for Diversity dance troupe, it’s destined to be a huge success.
